DBTAC Southwest ADA Center Education Initiative:
Promoting
Acquisition and Use of Accessible Information Technology in
Educational Settings
A key component of our mission is to promote the acquisition
and use of accessible information technology in primary, secondary
and post-secondary schools. To achieve this goal, the Southwest
ADA Center works with educators, parents, people with disabilities,
policymakers and a network of experts.
Some activities dedicated to this goal include:
- Providing training, technical assistance, and publications
on purchasing accessible information technology according to the
standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Providing training, technical assistance and publications directly
to organizations of parents of children with disabilities, disability
organizations and persons with disabilities.
- Facilitating the development of a network of individuals and
organizations with expertise in accessible IT who will be available
to provide in-depth technical assistance to schools on acquiring
and using universally accessible IT.
- Developing and disseminating publications, including e-bulletins,
to educators.
- Developing policies and technical criteria that educators and
educational agencies can use in purchasing and using accessible
technology.
