DBTAC Southwest ADA Center Education Initiative:

Promoting Acquisition and Use of Accessible Information Technology in Educational Settings

A key component of our mission is to promote the acquisition and use of accessible information technology in primary, secondary and post-secondary schools. To achieve this goal, the Southwest ADA Center works with educators, parents, people with disabilities, policymakers and a network of experts.

Some activities dedicated to this goal include:

Providing training, technical assistance, and publications on program accessibility as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Providing training, technical assistance, and publications on purchasing accessible information technology according to the standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Providing training, technical assistance and publications directly to organizations of parents of children with disabilities, disability organizations and persons with disabilities.

Facilitating the development of a network of individuals and organizations with expertise in accessible IT who will be available to provide in-depth technical assistance to schools on acquiring and using universally accessible IT.

Developing and disseminating publications, including e-bulletins, to educators.

Developing policies and technical criteria that educators and educational agencies can use in purchasing and using accessible technology.
