Grow Trumpet Honeysuckle for Hummingbirds

With its colorful, tubular blossoms and delicious nectar, the trumpet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is a great plant

Select a bright area that gets six or more hours of sunlight each day. Although it may withstand some shade, Trumpet Honeysuckle prefers full sun, especially in warmer climates.

Make sure the soil is rich in organic matter and has good drainage. Since Trumpet Honeysuckle favors slightly acidic soil over neutral soil, add compost to thick or clay soils to increase fertility and drainage.

Water frequently, especially while it's dry outside, but don't let it become too wet. To avoid root rot, let the top inch of soil dry out in between waterings.

To encourage rapid growth and copious flowering, fertilize the plant once in the early spring using a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. Steer clear of overfertilizing,

Before new growth starts, trim Trumpet Honeysuckle in late winter or early spring. To keep the plant at a manageable size and promote a bushier, more prolific plant

Give the vine something to climb, like a fence, arbor, or trellis. Being a fast-growing plant, trumpet honeysuckle will cover vertical structures in no time, adding beauty and drawing hummingbirds.
